This is not my pattern, but I found it and thought it would be perfect for our friend, the new Mom. She is very good at gardening and was having a boy. I wanted to make something that would be fun to use during the cold months, but could also be a cute keepsake for when the baby outgrew it.
My second nephew was born and his Mom wanted a pillow to match his brother's I had made. She gave me fabric that was left from his curtains. It was just enough to make a slipcover for a pillow form. I also wanted to have a zipper and cording on this pillow. I went with a brown corduroy that was really soft and matched the fabric really well.
For my nephew's second birthday, I surprised him and his Mom with a custom birthday party invitation. I knew he was really into construction vehicles so I made that the focus of the invitation.
I had recently found a site that custom prints fabric and decided this was the perfect pattern to test it out. The fabric came out great and I decided to make him a little pillow for nap time!
This was only the second time I had used a sewing machine and of course I decided I didn't want to make just a basic pillow. I looked up how to add cording. In addition, being the property of a two year old, it HAS to be machine washable. So I made it a slipcover to go onto a pillow form. That meant working with zippers.
A lot of patience and may YouTube video tutorials later, I had the first pillow I ever made. It wasn't perfect, but it was the right shape, fit the pillow and had a functional zipper. Success!
